At a recent luncheon hosted by the Economic Club of New York, Lazard Chairman and CEO Peter Orszag joined New York Times Opinion Editor Kathleen Kingsbury for a moderated conversation on the forces reshaping the global economy and business landscape. Drawing on the themes of his recent research, Orszag argued that we are living in a "new supply-side era," in which economic outcomes are increasingly driven by supply-side shocks rather than traditional demand-side dynamics.

The discussion explored what that shift means for businesses, investors, and policymakers. Topics included the financing and infrastructure needs of artificial intelligence, semiconductor concentration and U.S.-China competition, inflation and monetary policy, energy resilience, and the growing interaction between government policy and corporate decision-making. A central theme was the need for leaders to understand not only economic fundamentals but also the broader geopolitical and regulatory context in which they operate. As supply-side disruptions become more frequent and consequential, Orszag argued that the ability to interpret that context is increasingly critical to informed decision-making.
